Colombia is located to the North West of South America and has borders with Panama, Venezuela, Brazil, Ecuador and Brazil. It gained independence from Spain in 1810.
Colombia has an ethnically diverse population, with inhabitants descended from Spanish colonists, African slaves and European immigrants, thus making for a diverse mix of cultures and traditions.
Many people remember the drugs wars, with their associated violence and kidnappings, of the 1990’s. This was an armed struggle between government forces and FARC (Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia) which made the country a dangerous place to visit. However after formal peace negotiations, tourists are returning. Indeed, Colombia is now becoming safer and is a country well worth a visit, boasting no less than 7 UNESCO World Heritage sites.
Colombia is a Republic and the President is the Head of State and the Head of Government. Currently this is Iván Duque Marquez who has been in power since 2018.
