Switzerland is situated in the central Alpine region of Europe, bordering Italy in the South, Austria and the Principality of Liechtenstein in the East, Germany in the North and France in the West. Switzerland is a landlocked country with no direct access to the sea.
The capital city is Bern and other major cities include Basel, Geneva, Lucerne, Lugano and Zurich.
Switzerland has a President who is elected for a term of one year, currently the President is Ueli Maurer who has been in office since January 2019. He is not the head of state of the government or the country but is the President of the Swiss Confederation and is the presiding member of the seven member Swiss Federal Council – the President chairs meetings of this Council.
Switzerland has a temperate climate, in July and August temperatures can reach up to 28 Degrees Centigrade, in contrast Winter temperatures can go below zero. Temperatures vary according to the altitude.
Switzerland is one of the richest countries in the world and also has the highest wealth per capita of anywhere in the world. Not surprisingly it also has one of the highest levels of life expectancy in the world.
